HOW CROSS-DOCKING WORKS

At our Halifax and Moncton terminals, inbound freight is received, sorted by destination, and reloaded onto outgoing linehaul trucks - often within hours. Your pallets keep moving toward their final destination instead of sitting in storage, and you skip the cost of putting them there.

1. Receive

Inbound trailers arrive at the dock and freight is unloaded, scanned, and verified against your manifest.

2. Sort & Consolidate

Pallets are sorted by destination lane and consolidated with other freight heading the same way, maximizing trailer utilization.

3. Reload & Dispatch

Outbound trucks are loaded and dispatched on scheduled linehaul departures to Halifax, Moncton, Edmundston, and onward to Quebec and Ontario.

WHY SHIPPERS CROSS-DOCK

Lower Costs

Skip storage fees and pay only for the trailer space your freight occupies on each lane.

Faster Transit

Freight flows dock-to-dock through the network on nightly linehaul schedules instead of waiting in a warehouse.

Less Handling

Fewer touches mean fewer opportunities for damage - with scan events recorded at every stage.

Flexible Capacity

Consolidate LTL pallets into full trailerloads, or deconsolidate inbound loads into individual deliveries.

CROSS-DOCKING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is cross-docking?

Cross-docking is a logistics practice where inbound freight is unloaded at a terminal and transferred directly onto outbound trucks with little or no storage in between. It reduces handling and storage costs and speeds up transit times for palletized freight.

How much does cross-docking cost?

Pricing depends on pallet count, weight, and destination lane. Because you skip storage fees and share trailer space with other shipments on the lane, cross-docking is typically one of the most cost-effective ways to move palletized LTL freight. Request a quote online in minutes or call our dispatch team for recurring lane pricing.

How long can freight sit at a cross-dock terminal?

Cross-docked freight is built to move - most pallets are reloaded onto outbound linehaul within 24 hours of arrival. If you need short-term holding before dispatch, we can arrange storage at our Dartmouth warehouse.

Which lanes does NovaXpress cross-dock on?

Our core cross-dock lanes connect Halifax, Moncton, Edmundston, Yarmouth, Ottawa, and Toronto, with onward connections to Montreal and Quebec City. Nightly linehaul departures keep freight moving along the full Maritimes-to-Ontario corridor.
