What Is Cross-Docking? How It Works and When Shippers Should Use It

September 9, 2026

If you have ever watched a pallet come off one truck and go straight onto another, you have seen cross-docking. It is one of the simplest ideas in logistics - and one of the most effective ways to cut storage costs and speed up freight movement between the Maritimes and the rest of Canada.

How Cross-Docking Works

In a traditional warehouse flow, inbound freight is unloaded, put away on shelves, stored for days or weeks, picked again, and finally loaded for delivery. Cross-docking skips the middle. Freight arrives at a terminal, is scanned and sorted by destination on the dock itself, and is reloaded onto outbound trucks heading the right direction - often within hours.

At NovaXpress, cross-dock operations run at our Halifax and Moncton terminals. Linehaul trucks from across the region converge nightly; pallets are sorted by destination lane, consolidated into full outbound trailers, and dispatched along the Halifax–Moncton–Montreal–Toronto corridor before morning.

Why Shippers Cross-Dock
  • Lower costs. You skip storage fees entirely and pay only for the trailer space your pallets occupy on the lane.
  • Faster transit. Freight keeps moving on scheduled linehaul departures instead of waiting in a warehouse.
  • Less handling. Fewer touches means fewer opportunities for damage - and scan events at every stage keep your shipment visible.
  • Better trailer utilization. Consolidating LTL pallets from many shippers into full trailerloads lowers the per-pallet cost for everyone on the lane.
When Cross-Docking Is the Right Fit

Cross-docking shines when freight is already flowing on predictable schedules: retail replenishment, distribution to multiple stores, inbound production materials that are needed soon after arrival, or time-sensitive goods that should never sit. It is less suitable for freight that genuinely needs to be held - seasonal buffering, slow-moving inventory, or goods awaiting quality inspection. That is what warehousing is for.

The two services work best together. Many of our customers cross-dock the fast-moving majority of their freight and store the rest in our Dartmouth warehouse, with distribution and store-ready delivery handled as part of the same 3PL relationship.

Getting Started

If you ship palletized freight between Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Ontario on any kind of schedule, cross-docking is worth pricing. Request a quote online in minutes or call our dispatch team at +1 (902) 967-4991 - we will show you how your lanes would run through the network.
